The Karmann Ghia top frame is a complex thing. The folding frame has wood bows attached to it and the earliest Ghias have a wood bow on the rear shelf. The top itself lays over padding and the inner roof has a headliner. The padding is sandwiched between the top and the headliner. The restoration required can involve replacing quite a few parts and certainly requires much labor. The decision to undertake this job yourself should be made after a careful reading of the installation instructions. To determine what bows you will need, and also to see whether new padding is required you must strip off the top. Do not do this without taking careful notes of the layout and details such as staple placement, etc. Seeing this will save a lot of translation of instructions later. If you hire out the upholstery you may still consider installing the wood bows yourself. However, if you do that, please coordinate your efforts with your upholsterer as there are important measurements than need to be recorded from the orientation of the bows in the original top frame.
